Although this situation could have many causes, the problem it brings to mind is a broken elbow. In some spinet pianos, small right-angle parts called elbows are used to link the keys of the piano to the action. In the late 40″s and early 50″s, these elbows were made of plastic. Unfortunately, the catalyst used to make the molten plastic harden never stops working. So the elbows get harder and harder over the years until at age 20 or 25, they begin to shatter in normal playing. Replacement of the elbows restores the piano to its original usefulness.
