Around the monastery about three thousand people combined study in dozens of private and public schools which sometimes claim to be associated with Shaolin even though most of them have no relation to the monastery or its tradition. Most of the schools for foreigners, including the famous Palace of Kungfu, are commercial organizations. They hold courses one week to three months in length and charge $10 to $20 US per hour not including food and accommodation. The main disadvantage of such an education is not so much the price as the fact that it lacks a united educational system and a sense of true association with the Shaolin tradition.
