On the green bag service, I was able to recycle tins and cardboard. Why does the kerbside box not accept these materials?
As Leicester is a city, there is a large percent of terraced housing and many residents do not have the space to store several different containers for recycling, plus this would cause obstructions on the pavements. Therefore, the kerbside box was chosen as a suitable container as they are easy to store and don’t cause huge obstructions when presented on pavements. However, Leicester City is unique in having a Recycling Plant that can process and divert up to 70% of the waste from wheelie bins. Once the wheelie bin waste is collected, it is brought up to Leicester’s Recycling Plant, tipped and processed through the ball mill. This technology is able to extract all metals, kitchen waste, cardboard and other light material directly from the wheelie bin, so there is no need to collect these items separately through the kerbside service.
