ANSWER from Mike Ciannilli on January 4, 2000: We replace an average of only 40 tiles per flight. These tiles are damaged either during launch by ice and or debris, during flight by meteorites, or during landing by debris. Keep in mind we have an average of 24,000 tiles in total on the orbiters.
