Okay, Ill do that. What else should I do to make myself a marketable commodity as a writer?
Once you start writing for a good publication, you need to start asking publicists for free stuff, or product, as the marketing people call it. Do yourself a favor and pick up The Musicians Atlas or Billboards Musicians Guide to Touring and Promotion. Write a short letter explaining that your are a music journalist looking for new stuff to review, including the publications you write/have written for and all your contact info. Then fax, email, snail mail or hand deliver it to every record label listed under the A&R section of your guide. Before you know it, youll be swimming in music. And thats the real benefit of becoming a reviewer. Realize that many labels, especially the smaller, independent ones, dont have massive marketing budgets. Instead of sending you CDs, videos and T-shirts (as many labels do), you may just get a press release. If youre really interested in covering a particular artist, you can always arrange with your editor to interview that performer and then inform that
