OK If i get the marine paint. Should i get primer + marine paint+ clear coat?
The marine paint we used to use when I was working on steel ships, deep sea, was from International. 2 coats primer, one grey, one red, and then two coats of top coat. If it was being used on a previously rusted piece of steel,, wire brush heavily, then use an anti-rust agent. Then paint as I said above. One other thing I was introduced to was, if it’s an area of high traffic and gets rusty easily, wire brush all the rust off, then put a thin coat of boiled linseed oil, which you allow to dry (it takes quite a while, but it’s worth it) then paint over it.
Most marine paint is formulated as a system. I am not sure about ‘show’ type boats that might use a painting system more like Autos (pigment layer and clear top coat), but marine paints I have seen do not use a ‘clear coat’. Best to look at Marine paint suppliers to get some idea, ala: http://www.yachtpaint.com/usa/ (interlux).
