I’m with you — sort of. Pellets are a waste of money when you can feed whole, soft-bodied animals. Some people keep small fish in the tank for between-meal snacks. Don’t feed goldfish, though — they’re like junk food. Liver is good, when you can’t get whole animals. It helps if you can supplement it with a source of calcium (bonemeal or cuttlebone, for example). Older RES like vegetables. I hope you weren’t feeding iceberg lettuce; it has little nutritional value. Romaine, redleaf and greenleaf lettuces are fine. You can also try kale, dandelion leaves, and bits of sweet potato. Vegetable diets should be supplemented with fat-soluble vitamins (Linatone is good) and bonemeal.
