October 19, Will the B-R School System learn from other school committee successes?

At the last School Committee Meeting, I was finally able to address for the full School Committee my idea that we put together a team to seek out, analyze and report back on the successes of school districts around the state and from around the country. After a short discussion, it was agreed that this should be the responsibility of the Budget Subcommittee (Susan O’Brien, Donald DeLutis, Linda Dillon, Joseph Gillis). I tried to find out that evening about setting up a meeting, and then after the School Committee Meeting of 9/29 again tried to have a meeting called. However, still no meeting. Fortunately for other School Districts, many have actually worked on this issue. In yesterday’s New York Times was a story about a school district [Brooklawn, NJ] raising substantial amounts of money through sponsorships, naming rights, and a host of other creative ideas. The New York Times story also mentions many other successful schools around the country – schools that are thinking creatively
