Because it was just a matter of time before we had to. Yes, OPIRG did obtain free LCT rides for all students in 2002, but it was a concept that will be remembered for a lot of initial hype and virtually no follow up. Students were left to their own devices to find information about LCT, and the lack of communication between the College and LCT led to ridiculous crowds waiting for the bus around breaks and holidays because LCT had no idea when students were going home, and thus had to accommodate at the very last minute. Some students missed their flights because of such planning (or lack thereof). So, what was the point of offering a free product if it wasn’t working? The current student fare is designed to ameliorate the crowding problem by directly funding the special extra bus schedules for the rush periods.
