Nurse Specialist and Physician Assistant perform?
A2. Effective January 1, 1998, Sections 4511 and 4512 of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 removed restrictions on the type of areas and settings in which the professional services of Nurse Practitioners (NP), Physician Assistants (PA) and Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) are paid for by Medicare. These non-physician practitioners may now practice in urban, non-rural and rural settings, and may practice in home, SNF/NF, office and hospital places of service. Accordingly, payments are allowed for services furnished by these non-physician practitioners under applicable state licensure laws, but only if no facility or other provider is paid any amount with respect to the furnishing of such professional services. Payment for Physician Assistant’s services is paid directly to their employer.
