Now that the Final Agreement has taken effect, what happens next?
The effective date of the Tsawwassen Final Agreement completes the tripartite ratification process. As of April 3, 2009, Tsawwassen First Nation is a self-governing First Nation. With the exception of determining Indian status and the phase-out of tax exemptions, Tsawwassen First Nation is no longer subject to the Indian Act. Tsawwassen First Nation begins to exercise its rights and responsibilities in accordance with the Final Agreement, and becomes a member of the Metro Vancouver regional district.The Final Agreement will be implemented according to a 10-year implementation plan. The implementation plan identifies each party’s obligations stemming from the Final Agreement, the activities required to meet those obligations, and a corresponding timeframe.
