Nick Trends consumer report: Which is the low-cost airline?
British Airways beat EasyJet on five out of nine routes, and in one case (to Bologna) its fares were half those of its “low-cost” rival. This is despite the fact that EasyJet opened its bookings for April 2003 onwards only very recently (on the weekend before Christmas), whereas BA’s tickets are bookable up to a year in advance. Only on one route, to Faro, did EasyJet prove significantly cheaper than BA. Meanwhile, Ryanair fared reasonably well. Of the five routes surveyed, it was cheapest on three, though its fare to Bologna was twice BA’s (note that Ryanair flies not to Bologna itself but to nearby Forli airport), and it was narrowly beaten by EasyJet to Venice (although Ryanair does not fly to Venice’s Marco Polo airport, but to the town of Treviso on the mainland). It’s less easy to compare BA’s fares and those of Buzz, since so many of Buzz’s routes are to small French airports to which it is the only carrier.
