It is clear from the statements of the founders of our country that the second amendment was intended for private citizens to own weapons including firearms to protect themselves from the government if that ever became necessary. I realize that many of my friends in the Democratic Party and some of my friends in the Republican party say the purpose of that amendment was only to protect the right of Americans to own firearms to hunt animals for food. They often then go on to say that with our modern economy and the social security system and the welfare system that it is no longer necessary to hunt animals for food and they conclude that therefore the second amendment is an outdated anachronism. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the Soviets were reprted to have rejected the possibility of ever invading the United States because of the large number of people with firearms.
