Further Info] The Canadian Neutron Centre (CNC) is a proposed research reactor facility intended to meet Canada’s long-term neutron-scattering and CANDU-development requirements. The CNC is proposed as a replacement facility for AECL’s NRU reactor at Chalk River Laboratories, in operation since 1957. While the two new MAPLE reactors (MMIR-1 and 2) currently undergoing commissioning at Chalk River Laboratories (see related FAQ) will take over the medical-isotope production from NRU, the CNC would take over everything else. The CNC will maintain Canada’s leading role in materials analysis, solid-state research, and reactor development – a diverse assignment for one multipurpose, state-of-the-art machine. The National Research Council describes the CNC as “a visionary facility for science and industry with the pow
