Natural care for Black hair – Is Black hair stronger than other types of hair?
Natural Care for Black Hair is a bi-monthly class taught at Smiles Herb Shop in College Park, Md., by herbal health consultant Risikat “Kat” Okedeyi. African-American women and men are invited to come and learn the best products and remedies for maintaining beautiful hair, using natural products. The Natural Care class started after Risikat began getting bombarded with questions from Black people with all textures and hair types, asking questions like: How can I get my hair to grow? Why is my hair falling out? And what can I do about it? “One of things that I think happens within the Black community is the assumption that because Black hair is thicker, nappier and kinkier, that it’s stronger, and it’s not!,” says Risikat. ” Actually the myth that we need to dispel now is that because it’s kinky, that’s how it can withstand anything.
