Nansen and Johansen lived on polar bear and walrus for nine months. Why didn they suffer from scurvy?
While most of the western world is convinced you will fall victim to scurvy if you don’t have fresh fruits and vegetables, as the Inuit and Eskimo peoples know, you can stay healthy by eating ALL of the polar bear and walrus. While western appetites flag at eating the contents of stomachs and intestines, the people of the Arctic regard them as delicacies and indeed, both walrun and polar bear eat vegetation of various sorts, so whatever is in their stomachs and intestines provides the necessary amount of vitamin D to ensure good health.
