Xfce 4.2: You will need a third party program to provide you the icons. Suggestions are: pcmanfm, rox, nautilus etc etc… Beware that those programs will kill xfdesktop and the ability to use the right click menu. Xfce 4.4: You can enable the icons in : Settings > Desktop Preferences > Behavior > Desktop Icons. You will need to build xfdesktop with thunar-vfs and dbus support. (.
