My water usage is higher than I expected. What are the most common causes?
Check your toilet for leaks. This is an easy process using dye strips, which are provided free to our customers at the Water Department office. Drop dye strips into the toilet tank which will discolor the water. Let sit 15 20 minutes. If the colored water seeps into the bowl, your toilet will need to be repaired. Check your outside irrigation system and timers. During summer months, this is the most common culprit for high usage. There are many reasons why timers malfunction and watering lines can become damaged or break underground. Check your irrigation system frequently.
