News servers are stupid, and seem to be constitutionally incapable of counting. This is especially common with poorly maintained servers, and it is especially noticeable right after you subscribe to a new group. Your server administrator can help minimize this problem. Ask him or her to check to make certain that the “low article numbers” in the “active file” are being updated properly. In MT-NewsWatcher 3.1, you can address this problem by checking the ‘Use accurate (but slow) article counts’ checkbox in the Options panel of the News servers dialog.
