There two types of stains on teeth – external and internal. Internal stains are stains embedded in the tooth structure and cannot be removed. However, the most common is external stains which occur on the tooth surface. These stains come from beverages and foods. Some children are observed to have more than others. They are called “chromogenic stains” and are caused by “color-forming organisms (chromogenic organisms)” in the mouth. It is observed that children having it have a smaller chance of getting cavities. These stains are easily polished off. However, they will recur. As the child grows they become less on the permanent teeth.
