Your tulip tree, Liriodendron tulipifera, is most likely infested with tuliptree scale, an insect that secretes large quantities of honeydew. Lower branches, or even entire trees, die from heavy infestations of this pest. Scale insects overwinter as immatures, then grow rapidly until they mature in August. Young scales are produced in late August, at which time the old females dry up and fall from the tree. Spray your tree with Sevin about September 1 and repeat two weeks later. As insurance, spray the tree with a dormant oil on a warm day in early spring before the buds open.
