Some patients will have a low thyroglobulin (Tg) level while taking thyroxine, but the level of Tg will increase significantly when thyroxine is withdrawn or a patient is given recombinant TSH. In patients with an abnormal Tg rise, this can indicate the presence of occult thyroid cancer. For the results of one study where such patients were treated with radioactive iodine, see Efficacy of high therapeutic doses of iodine-131 in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer and detectable serum thyroglobulin.
