If your employer is brand new or changed payroll companies last year, the EIN may be a new one. Or maybe the company changed names. If so, the EIN and company name won’t be in the IRS system (the IRS gets *your* W-2 in May so it can’t compare it right now). This means you will have to file by mail and include a copy of the W-2 with your return. Yes, it sucks–it can take 3 weeks for the IRS to get around to keying in your return.

did you file without your w-2?if so that’s the problem the ein is on the w-2.your return was rejected the second time because you filed duplicate returns, you can’t file the same return twice. you must amend the first one by filing an amended return form 1040x by mail not e-file. hrblock workers don’t have much training in taxes no more than you are me,they messed your return up now your refund will be delayed.i advise you to call the irs tomorrow at 1-800-829-1040 to see what you can do to get this matter fixed.

This must be a night mare. Obviously you have the right number, so two things can be wrong. First HRB may be typing it in wrong-go to the office and ask to see your return in the computer and verify the number yourself. (Ask for the office manager) Second your company is new or they are using an invalid EIN number. If you worked for the same company last year get out an old W2 and look at the number. If any of your friends work for the same company call one and ask them to verify the number. Be sure you are using the Federal EIN number some times I have seen the state number to be different. Call your employer and ask if anything strange happened this year with their EIN number (company got bought or something of that nature. The IRS may actually have the wrong number. Good Luck! and Sorry! This advice was prepared based on our understanding of the tax law in effect at the time it was written as it applies to the facts that you provide. do you have the original w2’s or are you trying to file with the last pay stub. Sit down and verify all information on the return is correct, take your time and go line by line, number by number. Maybe if you do have the original W2 you are transposing a number.
