I agree with Shawn, cook some crescent rolls (because of the high fat content) on it to “season” the stoneware. But first you need to clean it, and believe it or not your oven will do the work for you. If you have a self cleaning oven, put your stoneware in the oven, middle shelf and clean your oven. When the cycle is finished and the oven is cool, your stone will just need to have the ashes brushed off. Then you can do the crescent rolls trick. If you don’t have a self cleaning oven, I would not use oven cleaner, but rather put the stone in the oven-which has to be clean or you’re about to set it on fire- and set the oven as high as it will go for 2-3 hours. You won’t get the same results, but it should help.
