My sister and I are going to be managing our moms affairs now that her Alzheimers disease has progressed. What options do we have to make decisions for her legally?
You and/or your sister can be appointed by a court to be your mother’s guardian or conservator. Guardianship allows you to manage a person’s financial and/or personal affairs because the person is not able or competent to do so. Conservatorship would give you either specific or wide-ranging powers over your mother’s property only. For example, power can range from check cashing to selling property. Conservatorship can be used for people who cannot make financial decisions, but can manage other personal decisions.
