This is another one of those questions whose answer could vary by state, so this answer applies to most states (but possibly not all). Whether or not you can do anything depends on whether or not a contract was broken, or whether or not the new person interferes with your quite enjoyment of the property. There are possibly two contracts in play. The first is your lease. Your landlord could restrict you from bringing in another person if it is stated in your lease. If it is not, then the law presumes that you have the right to sublet your rental. Most landlords have a “no sublet” clause in their lease, but not all. If your lease has such a clause, then your landlord can enforce it. The second contract you have is between you and your roommate. When you agree to move in with someone else a contract is created. I would imagine that you personally can’t, but that if your landlord doesn’t approve, they may be able to legally take some sort of action. after all, it is the landlord’s property, so they have the ultimate right to say who can stay there or not. it may involve kicking both the other person and your roommate out, though, I suppose depending on the situation…
