There are those who argue that either methods are actually “nitrate factories”, but the simple fact is that without utilization of a good deep sand bed or refugium (which can house a DSB) along with sufficient good quality live rock you’ll be hard pressed to experience DE-nitrification (the end cycle that occurs in anaerobic areas of a DSB that turn nitrates into nitrogen).
