my question is that i have lots of heart pulpations, what should be my concerns going under anesthesia?
Answer Hi Sharon, thanks for your question. Congratulations on quitting smoking, that is a major milestone and helps to decrease your risks with anesthesia. When you say heart palpitations it is hard to know exactly what your current heart condition is and so that makes it difficult to say how it may relate to your anesthetic risk. The best thing to do is discuss this with your anesthetist so they can review your chart and see exactly what sort of heart issues you have. Having said that, I do not want to scare you about surgery. It is important to know that we do anesthesia on people with heart conditions on a daily basis without incident. When there is a heart condition of significance we (or the surgeon) often request cardiac clearance which is a consult by a cardiologist to say the patient is of acceptable risk for surgery.
