My question is, how did the Europeans (specifically the Spanish missionaries) learn the Native American languages?
Answer Hi John, First, for the most part, the Spanish did not learn local languages. The first Conquistadors compelled natives to learn Spanish. The Spanish leaders began to ban use of native languages and burned native writings. All elements of native culture were ruthlessly wiped away. Of course, this begs the question, how did the locals become fluent in a foreign language? I cannot say I know for certain, but the usual process would be for someone to teach a few basic words by showing an object and then saying the word for it. A student would basically build up a small vocabulary and be able to communicate basic ideas, although not particularly fluently. Over years of doing translation, they may get better. Spanish teachers also trained young children in Spanish only once communities were established. I hope this helps!
