My parents do not support me, so how do I complete the 2010–2011 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)?
To be considered financially independent of your parents, you must meet one of the following conditions: • Have been born before January 1,1987. • Be a veteran or be currently serving in the military on active duty for purposes other than training. • Married. • A ward-of-the-court, orphan, or have been in foster care any time since turning the age of 13 or older. • Be an emancipated minor as determined by a court in your state. • Have been under the care of a legal guardian as determined by a court in your state of legal residence. • Have been an unaccompanied youth who is homeless after July 1, 2009 as designated by a school district homeless liaison, a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development representative, or a director of a homeless shelter/ transitional living facility. • Have legal dependent(s), other than a spouse, for whom you provide more than half of their support between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011.
