First, always water a plant thoroughly before inserting the stake and adding a water reservoir (globe, plastic bottle, wine bottle). You want the soil to be stable and it makes stake insertion much easier. When you add the water reservoir, the water should just sit and wait until the soil and roots near it begin to dry. The rate at which the plant will use the water in the reservoir is dependent upon the type of plant, the outside temperature, the humidity, and most importantly, the composition of the soil. If the soil contains of a lot of light material and as such is not designed to hold water, the water will run through fairly quickly. Your options to remedy this situation are to either 1) re-pot with a denser soil, or, 2) allow it to drain (onto the ground or into another pot that doesn’t have a drain hole) and fertilize it more frequently (not through the nanny stake though!) to compensate for the minerals that are being washed out more quickly than normal.
