My mother is 90 years old, her income in excess of social security is $1,068. Does she need to file a return?
If her only income other than social security is $1068, she would only have to file if this was self-employment income or church employment income. If some money was withheld or she made estimated tax payments, she should file for a refund even if the above is not applicable. Filing requirements are identified in IRS Pub 501 and any one of the income tax instruction booklets (1040, 1040A, 1040EZ).
