john you can’t simply hook up a external monitor without changing some of the display settings or fn + the key that has crt/lcd on it, could be a loose connector on the motherboard to the laptop screen try the fn+crt/lcd key with the monitor hook up if works go to the bios and make sure your bother didn’t change any other function mainly the monitor function
