Inside the tap is a couple of sliding ceramic plates, there is no washer as such like the old taps. You can usually unscrew the body as it is in 2 pieces, once you remove it from the sink first. You can buy a kit to repair the more expensive brand taps, which includes new ceramic parts etc. I tried to repair my tap once, i only made it worse, and i am a friggin mechanical engineer, so i am no dud handyman.
