Carefully dig the dirt away from one corner of your bed. Now spray some water on the exposed boards to wash away the dirt. With a bad case of rot you will see obvious cavities in the boards. If you do not see any obvious cavities, then take something like a screwdriver and poke a bit at the wood. If the screwdriver tip enters the wood, then that is an area where rot is taking place.
