My friend suffered from hyperemisis gravidarum during her pregnancy Can you tell me more about this condition?
Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) is severe pregnancy sickness, and it is a debilitating condition affecting about one percent of pregnant women. The woman is unable to tolerate food or fluids without vomiting, so she loses weight and becomes clinically dehydrated. HG usually begins at around six weeks of pregnancy and lasts until around sixteen to twenty weeks (although some unlucky women suffer for the duration of their pregnancy). Women with HG generally need one or more hospital stays when fluids can be given via a tube into a vein in the back of the hand to reverse the dehydration. Various medications to try and control the vomiting are also given, although success with these vary. No-one really knows why some women suffer such a severe level of sickness during pregnancy. It is likely that many factors are involved, perhaps including high levels of the pregnancy hormone HCG, thyroid levels and alterations in liver function. Genetics may also play a part if there is HG in your family, yo
