There are two ways you can handle this. If the person who is hosting the party has homeowners, renters or a condominium policy, you can extend the liability over from that policy and just request that your agent issue a Certificate of Insurance showing that you have coverage. This will work as long as the person hosting the party is not charging any money for attendance at the party or for drinks. This is obviously the cheapest way to handle it since it would be free or at very little cost (depending on how much liability the party hall is requiring and how much coverage you have on your homeowners). I have done this with many clients for their wedding, bar mitzvah, christening, etc. The other scenario is to purchase a one day event policy from an independent agent that is licensed to sell surplus lines company (think Lloyds of London, Scottsdale, Penn-America, etc.).
