My ferrets have stopped using their litter tray. How can I make them use it again instead of just toileting where they please?
When I only had Slinky and Flea they stuck rigidly to pooping in one place. However, when I got Moonshine he decided (for whatever reason) that he’d like to poo somewhere DIFFERENT to Slinky and Flea. This made cleaning them out rather more of a hassle! Unfortunately I haven’t found a cure for this behaviour yet! One reason why ferrets will sometimes decide to poop in more than one place is because they are seeking out an alternative place to defecate because their original litter spot is already ‘full’. If you aren’t cleaning out their litter every day, or you aren’t putting down a thick enough layer of it, it will quickly become soaked in urine and your fuzzies won’t want to put their paws in it! This is one reason why ferrets seek out new poop areas. A good rule of thumb is: if you ARE cleaning them out every day check to see that the litter you’re cleaning out isn’t sodden right through.
