My door is rusting near where the lock and exterior handle has been installed. Whats causing this?

Probable cause is metal filings created when the lock was installed. The lock installation requires the door to be drilled right through which can generate hot metal filings. These filings may have may have embedded into the painted door surface and if so would rust very quickly.
