My dog has heartworms but can be treated till next month! What do I do?
It really is in the dog’s best interest to get her to a healthy weight and strong and then she should make it through treatment with flying colors. I have fostered many dogs with heartworms and they have all done very well as long as we make sure they are strong and have a good body weight first. Heartworm is a very serious disease, but it takes a long time to actually kill a dog, so a month or so to get the dog strong enough for treatment isn’t a big deal. Just get her healthy and then she’ll take the treatment wonderfully. Heartworms do make the dog very lethargic because with the heart full of worms the heart can’t pump blood efficiently, but heartworm doesn’t cause the dog pain, it just takes away a lot of their energy. Just give the dog a nice comfy place to rest and she will do just fine while she gets strong enough for treatment. Good Luck!
