My display doesn have a HDMI socket. Can I play HD (bluray or HDDVD) over component?
Generally yes, but it can depend on the disc. There is a flag called ICT (Image Constraint Token) that, if set, stops the HD player from sending the movie over Component in HD. So far these have not been set, and there is a general agreement not to set this flag for the next 5 years (actually a law in Japan regarding this, but more a ‘gentlemen’s agreement elsewhere). So you should be fine.
