When a child learns to walk, it is common place for them to walk on tip toes. This is nothing to be concerned about. It is expected that by the time a child reaches 3 years old they have learnt to walk normally and no longer walk on their tiptoes. If you notice that your child is still walking on their toes after the age of three and particularly as they reach school age it is recommended that you get them checked out. Although there are many causes of toe walking in older children, often it is simply through habit. This is termed idiopathic or habitual toe walking. It is important to note that toe walking can be a symptom of more serious conditions for example cerebral palsy. If you are at all concerned, speak to your GP.
