My child had a voiding cystogram (VCUG) and the doctors tell me they found ‘reflux’. What is that?
When the bladder squeezes urine out when your child is ‘peeing’, there are 2 valves that stop urine from being squeezed up the ureters and into the kidneys. If these valves don’t work right, then urine can ‘back up’ into the kidneys and cause infections. This is reflux and can cause scarring of the kidneys. In some cases your child will be prescribed protective antibiotics to be taken for many months until she ‘grows out’ of the reflux, in some cases surgery may be needed.
