It’s best to leave the rhizomes in the ground. Make sure your plants have adequate water and fertilizer to help them grow until the cold weather arrives. When temperatures drop into the low 40s, check the mulch to make sure the rhizomes are protected from freezing temperatures. Leave potted plants outdoors until a freeze is expected. Then move to a warm location until the cold weather is over. If you need to dig up the rhizomes, remove them and allow to air-dry for a few days. Then remove the adhering soil and place them in a box with peat moss or vermiculite to stay dry. Store them in a cool, dry spot until spring planting time.
