He could sponsor you for a green card only after he becomes a US Citizen and it would take many years. Only an employer would be able to sponsor you for a work visa and these are very difficult to get with the economy the way it is. Any potential employer would need to be able to prove that they can not find somebody within the US to take the job. At this point in time, you would be better off seeing what you can do to renew your New Zealand work permit. Since you’re in the country already, it wouldn’t be terribly difficult.
