In my past experiences you do not need to buy the groom a special gift for the wedding. But we, the groomsman, tend to spend extra money during the bachelor party. Normally, we make sure the groom spends no money of his own that night and any gifts he gets are bachelor party related. An easy example would be if the bachelor likes golf, we’d take him golfing and everybody would pitch in for a new club.
