My boyfriend has Klinefelters syndrome and we would like to start a family. Is there any chance that anything can be done with external assistance to try and have a baby for us?
Your ability to conceive will depend on whether your boyfriend is producing any sperm. More recent IVF techniques, using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (in which a single sperm is injected into an egg) have allowed a few men with Klinefelter’s syndrome to have children. However, the chance of a man being able to produce enough sperm for the technique to be successful is still quite limited. The majority of men with Klinefelter’s syndrome do not produce sperm, but a few may still produce small ‘pockets’ of sperm in their testis. These sperm can sometimes be found by taking tissue samples directly from their testis. Speak with a local infertility clinic to discuss further whether this technique is an option for you as a couple. For more information on Klinefelter’s syndrome, click here.
