My Blackberry display is showing “gsm” or “edge”. Still I cannot access my Mails?

Please note that Your Blackberry would work only if it shows GSM or EDGE (in upper case). The possible reason for not showing the same is either the blackberry services not activated, low coverage area or there is some software problem in the handheld device.
