My audio application only handles 16-bit data, but Layla records 20-bit data via its analog inputs, and up to 24-bit data via S/PDIF. Is the system compatible with my software?
The resolution of Laylas internal audio path is 24-bits, and data from both the analog inputs and the S/PDIF input is written to the disk in 24-bit words. The data will play back at the size supported by your software, from 8-bit through 24-bit resolutions. If your software only supports 16-bit words, Layla dithers the 24-bit data down to whatever size your software supports, or to the size you have specified. In the case of an audio application that supports only 16-bit resolution, the data would be dithered down to 16 bits. Since the data was recorded and processed at high bit-resolution (24-bit), the final, dithered 16-bit audio will sound better and quieter than if it had been recorded using a standard 16-bit recording system.
