My 8 month old boston terrier is spotting. When should I breed?
When she is over 2 but under 5 When she is being actively shown/worked When she has a handful of titles to her name When she has her hips/elbow/eye clearances When she is registered with a legit Kennel Club When she is from a great lineage When you know enough about breeding to lecture me, not the other way round When you could say yes to all of the above questions when applied to the sire and his owner, not just you. In a word, never. Spay her. Anybody who think it’s ok to spay a puppy (who is the equivilent of a 10 year old girl FFS), has abolutely no business breeding whatsoever.
EEEK!! At 8 months, she’s still a baby. Sigh. I suppose I have to tell you bitches should have at least 2 seasons (and 3 if they come in bang on 6 months), or be 2 years old before they have their first litter. By that time, they will be 2/3 times more at risk of developing female cancers later on because for every season they have, the more the chance that this will happen. To say nothing of the risk of picking up a uterine infection like Pyometra which can be fatal. Spay please.
Breed her when: 1. She is AKC registered (or other legit registries like Canadican KC) 2. She is at least 2 yrs old and been tested for all genetic problems in the breed. 3. She has been shown and earned a champion title. 4. When you have written permission with the breeder to breed her. The male should have the above too. If you cannot do all this, then take her to be spayed when she is out of heat in 3 weeks. Keep in mind that most all Bostons need an expensive c-sections to deliver the puppies ($1500 or more).
